The 56th issue of RIDE Cycling Review (volume 02, 2012) has been printed and is now being distributed. Subscription copies were lodged with Australia Post on Monday 14 May (at 12.02pm). Yes. It feels as fast as it looks. Due to the seat post design, only two of our taller staff members could ride this bike for the Round Table – a sore point for those without the necessary femur length! An entry-level bike ($2,999) with a revered cycling name emblazoned on the tubes. The Merckx is a budget bike that rides with class – the results back up the pedigree. How do they do it? $3,999 for a quality frame with Shimano Ultegra Di2, Fi:zi’k Arione saddle and capable Giant-branded wheels – RIDE was left trying to crunch the numbers. This is a bike that rides out of its price point and was deservedly applauded. After taking the Focus Izalco out for the first time, Toby Shingleton (who did the full review) walked into the office and said, “This is the best carbon bike I have ever ridden.” When it was time to do the Round Table, the Dura-Ace Di2 equipped bike impressed but to varying degrees for the testers. It’s a 6.0kg bike with just 787g of that being the bare frame. So it’s light. The numbers tell that clearly enough, but what about the ride?
