Alex Morgan – photo diary (part 10)
Alex Morgan’s photo diary, part 10, continues on from his stay at the AIS training base in Livigno, Italy. Between photo diaries part 9 and 10, aside from training he and the team have also raced at the Coppa Bologna, a one-day stage race in Tuscany on the 21st, and ridden the Mapei Stelvio ride. The next instalment will see Alex back in Australia with a slight shift in focus… Instead of riding at the U23 World TT Morgan will now be focusing on the ‘bigger picture’ in preparation for the upcoming track season, whilst riding for the remainder of the season with domestic NRS team VIS Jayco-Apollo. With the world cups, worlds championships and Commonwealth Games coming up- it should be a big one.

“On the way, during a five hour drive to Tuscany. Quite a change of scenery from Livigno- hot, dry, sunshine and plenty of vineyards. Beautiful.”
“Well, number 13 is definitely unlucky for me. Something bad has happened every time I’ve worn it! At Coppa Bologna it was a dodgy stomach- not exactly ideal for a long, hot, hilly race!”
“Coppa Bologna start/finish. It’s a shame I didn’t make it to the finish but starting on the track was cool, it’s been too long!”
“Pre-race meal at the start location. It was like a sauna in there.”
“My bike computer for the day. We did loops of a couple of different circuits so I put all of the information on my top tube.”
“Final corner onto the velodrome for the finish… All I’m going to say is that it’s lucky there wasn’t a big bunch at the finish…”
“Aussie group photo at the top of Stelvio. From left–right: Stuart Mulhern, Ben Comfort, Campbell Flakemore, Calvin Watson, Alex Morgan, Brad Linfield, Adam Phelan, Damien Howson, Alex Clements, Caleb Ewan & Jordan Kerby.”
“Mapei gala dinner in Bormeo the night before the Mapei Stelvio ride.”
“The Mapei Stelvio ride. Thousands of cyclists everywhere! As Mapei is such an important sponsor for our team we happily attended and even got to start on the front row! These guys were definitely not taking it easy either…”
“Our super soigneur Danny Clarke tackled the Stelvio ride after only a few days of training… As you can see, tough gig, but he made it to the top.”
“A massage and the Tour- a good afternoon.”
“The lack of snow didn’t seem to phase these skiers. Roller skates seemed to do the trick.”
“Rescue chopper just out the front of our house… Luckily none of us needed a ride in it!”
“5kg of Nutella anyone?”
“Local kids with what appears to be an inflatable pool and some sort of bike. They were struggling to keep the pool on the roof!”
“Roller set-up, quite a few episodes of ‘Suits’ were watched here.”
“Wifi and the Tour at the local café… Many hours were spent here.”
“A railway crossing stop just across the border in Switzerland.”
“Riding around the Lake in St Moritz. A very beautiful place.”
“Recovery ride through the tunnel to the border and back. Literally the only flat ride in the whole area.”
“St Mortiz (Switzerland).”
“At the end of the tunnel out of Livigno. It’s one pretty serious dam wall!”
“At the end of the tunnel out of Livigno.”
“Storm rolling in… I ran home!”
“In the clouds on the final day in Livigno.”
“Views on the drive back down to Varese.”
