In RIDE #67 (on sale in March 2015) there was a subscription promotion that gave readers a chance to win a fantastic bike from Cervélo – the aerodynamic S3 frame, complete with Shimano Ultegra Di2. Valued at $5,400, the bike (pictured below) has been reviewed in RIDE (#64) and received a glowing appraisal from Graham Springett.
The prize draw took place in the RIDE office on Tuesday 9 June and the winner is Kevin Morgan from near Launceston, Tasmania.
RIDE‘s publisher, Rob Arnold, spoke with Mr Morgan to give him the news and find out a little more about him and his cycling history.
“You may not know, but I’m a bit of a bikie,” said Morgan. “I’ve ridden most of my life and I actually raced for Australia at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.”
He was part of the four-man 100km team time trial formation that finished 12th. Not long after the Games “they pulled out a marble and that was it – I was in the army and off to Vietnam”. His cycling career was over but he continues to ride regularly covering “around 200km a week”. Now 67, Morgan is still working in a timber mill that he owns.
Last month, he took time off work and went to Belgium for “the second holiday of my life” and took a bike with him. He rode almost 1,000km during that adventure and told RIDE that it may serve as the catalyst for him to “consider that thing they call retirement”.
He’s a genuine cycling enthusiast and although he has what his staff referred to as a “collection of bikes”, Morgan admitted that he was “thrilled to win the Cervélo… I’ve ridden a lot of bikes over the years but I’ve admired that one on the pages of your magazine before and was interested to know how it might handle – I guess I’ll soon find out.”
