Roubaix velodrome… on an ordinary day

We’ve seen it plenty of times as a dressed up destination: the Stade Velodrome in Roubaix, the final metres of the Queen of the Classics are played out on this concrete track in the north of France. The entrance is on the Avenue du Parc des Sports. And there’s even a sector of pavé to lead riders there. Once inside this stadium the roar is immense and riders confess to getting chills as they enter before doing a couple of laps and then collapsing, exhausted from the effort of the 260-odd kilometres that led them there.

And then there’s the other 364 days of the year. The glamour doesn’t last, at least that’s the conclusion one might come to should one visit the velodrome in this northern industrial town almost any time other than race day each April. Wei Yuet Wong decided to visit and capture the atmosphere of this stadium on a cool February day earlier this year.
