The week that was: photos for discussion (wk13, 2014)

The week that links the Tour of Flanders to Paris-Roubaix: a hectic time for cycling. There is racing in Belgium (the mid-week Schelderprijs), France (Circuit de la Sarthe), the Basque Country (with the WorldTour stage race, the Vuelta al Pais Vasco), and preparations being made for a day in hell… This is our second instalment of TWTW – The Week That Was – with photos by Graham Watson and Wei Yuet Wong. (Click here for the first instalment.) It’s a chance for a few highlights of recent days and a chance for a closer look at photos we may otherwise gloss over…

This was also the week when RIDE Media joined Instagram. We’re getting the hang of it but we can now begin sharing images from our archives with the ‘Gram crowd – and we’ve begun in a flurry by posting a collection of shots from our Bikes of the Pro Peloton feature from RIDE #63. Follow us, like us, write to us… join us as we ride through to the end of production of another issue of RIDE Cycling Review.

Be sure to have a look through the Features section of our site or use the search engine if you’re interested in a topic that’s not on our homepage. We interviewed Liz FitchBen Swift, and Felicity Wardlaw. We offered galleries from the Roubaix velodrome and Schelderprijs, and had a chat with the crew at Cycling Central. And now we wait with anticipation for the Queen of the Classics on Sunday night… In the meantime, here are a few photos for discussion from week 13 of 2014.

TWTW – week 13 of 2014

Marcel Kittel is showing no sign of slowing down. He won the Schelderprijs semi-Classic for a third time on Wednesday.

Alberto Contador was shooting with his fingers once again… yep, he’s got his winning groove on early in 2014. At the Vuelta al Pais Vasco he was on the attack… and on the podium in a Basque hat.

Go Ro bro! Rohan Dennis was second to Alex Dowsett in the time trial of Circuit de la Sarthe and second to team-mate Ramunas Navardauskas on GC. He got a few more prize jerseys and a GC win is due soon…

Cadel Evans is riding back into form in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. His facial expression while on the wheel of Mikel Nieve begs for a caption contest… but then again aren’t fart jokes a little passe…?

Bling! A win. Michael Matthews picked up his first victory of 2014 in the Vuelta La Rioja on 6 April and backed it up with another win for Orica-GreenEdge in Vitoria during the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.

New shoes for every race in 2014? It would seem Fizik are making the most of the attention Dave Millar gets… but how long can they keep up the different colour theme? This example is from Schelderprijs…

Samuel Sanchez in BMC kit… sure it’s going to take the whole season to adjust to seeing him in anything but the orange of Euskaltel-Euskadi. He beats his old rival Mr Valverde in stage four of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco while a fan hangs an Euskadi jersey over the barriers…

Cadel Evans was seventh in stage four of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco… and he’s fourth overall behind regular rivals: Contador, Valverde and Cunego – yep, Damiano. He’s consistent again 10 years after his epic season.
