There may have only been one second separating first place from second in the overall rankings but the final stage of the 2014 Tour Down Under had effectively been won by Simon Gerrans on the penultimate day. Cadel Evans did position himself at the head of the peloton in the final laps but he wasn’t going to steal the advantage that the Australian champion had built with his acquisition of time bonuses throughout the week.
Simon finished the sixth stage in 11th place: rider #11 would roll over the line as the winner of the 16th edition of Australia’s biggest race. Gerrans is the first three-time champion of the Tour Down Under. Cadel is the runner-up. Diego Ulissi rounds out the podium. The winner of the Queen Stage, Richie Porte, is fourth overall. And Nathan Haas ended the week in fifth place on GC.

PS. Big thanks to the race organisers for making this event bigger and better every year. Cheers to the riders for putting on such a great show. And a loud bravo to all the spectators who made the effort to stand by the side of the road and create such a great atmosphere… let’s do it all again in January 2015!
