Caffeine Culture. Sydney, Sydney Uni Velo Club
At 6:00am, on the opposite side of Centennial Park from the long-established Randwick Botany club, you’ll find Woollahara Gates, the meeting point for one of Sydney’s freshest bunches. Sydney Uni Velo (SUVelo as it’s known) is just under two years old but the growth and popularity of this club belies its short history. The highly recognisable white, yellow and blue kit seems to be ever present, a testament to the activity of its 160 or so members. This map (below) is for Friday’s ride, starting at Centennial Park and heading directly toward La Parouse before turning around and going back to one of the clubs popular coffee shops. Alimentari, on the corner of Hopetoun Street and William Street, Paddington has a “awesome prosciutto and olive bread melt”, (John).
They have a range of rides, all leaving from the same location in Centennial Park.
Departs from: Woolhara Gate, Centennial Park.
Days and departure time: Tuesday – Saturday, 6:00am.
Distance: 30-100km depending on the day.
Difficulty: Moderate. The various bunches are streamed according to rider ability, and the pace is regulated by experienced riders.
Notes: The SUVelo bunches go out of their way to welcome new riders into their bunch rides, though if you do plan on riding with them regularly it’s courteous to join the club too. The Friday coffee ride is the best option for a first timer.
