Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge
The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand’s premier and largest cycling event where up to 10,000 riders from across New Zealand and over 20 countries around the globe take part each year.
Held on the last Saturday of every November around the pristine and picturesque Lake Taupo, the event will this year celebrate its 37th anniversary on Saturday the 30th of November.
It is well known for its 160km Bike Barn Solo, a one lap circumnavigation of Lake Taupo, but this is just one of 16 event categories on offer, with both road and mountain Bike options for individuals and teams, catering to all levels of cycling and fitness abilities.
The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge sits firmly on the world stage and is recognised as a UCI Golden Bike Event (one of the six best recreational rides in the world!), with its Mountain Bike categories taking place on trails which were recently awarded Silver Ride Centre status by the International Mountain Bike Association (one of only two in the world). This year’s two lap enduro ride, the Barfoot & Thompson Enduro, will also for the first time be a UMCA (Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association) 200 mile World Championship Race, with the Barfoot & Thompson Extreme Enduro eight lap category being a qualifying event for Race Across America.
