The 18th stage of the 104th Tour de France boasted the innovation of a finish on the Col d’Izoard on the same day that the first of two chapters of the 2017 ‘La Course’ was contested. Léon van Bon and his photographic partner Joris Knapen captured some of the action from the men’s race…

By the end of the day, it was a sight to make the local fans happy: Warren Barguil, in the polka-dot jersey, on his own, at the top of a mountain, with his arms in the air…! The fourth stage win at the 2017 Tour for Team Sunweb is a moment to remember. That it happened on the Col d’Izoard not too long after the Frenchman was injured in a crash at the Tour de Suisse makes it even more poignant.

The broadcast showed the images of Barguil as he crossed the line but in our gallery of stage 18, we have selected 10 photos that illustrate some of the action – plus some from the preamble and presentations – and show the race from a different angle.

Léon van Bon and Joris Knapen are submitting a daily portfolio of images and you’ll find some of their excellent work in the next issue of our magazine… but for now, here is a little reminder of the events of 20 July 2017.
