Interviews before stage 4: Tour Down Under
Get a bit of insight from the start of the fourth stage of the Santos Tour Down Under…
During the week of the 20th edition of the Santos Tour Down Under, RIDE Media is working with the race organisers before the start of each stage. We have been collecting a few quotes from riders and others associated with the events.
Before the start of stage four in Norwood, I spoke to an interesting mix of riders, ex-riders, and a team manager.
This is part of a new initiative for the race’s SoundCloud station.
The interviews before stage four are with…
- Shayne Bannan and Damien Howson of the Mitchelton-Scott team
- Tiago Machado of Team Katusha-Alpecin
- Simon Gerrans of BMC Racing
- Mark Renshaw of Team Dimension Data
- Brendan Canty of EF Education First-Drapac powered by Cannondale
- Scott Bowden of UniSA
- Campbell Flakemore of Stanley Street Social Club

There’s a lot to listen to but the aim is to provide some commentary on what we can expect as the race unfolds.
The stage is underway and, for the first time in 2018, Bowden has refrained from attacking. He talked this morning about the physical effects of his escapes in stages one, two and three of the 20th TDU and how his body is managing the strain.
The veteran of 16 Tours Down Under, Mark Renshaw explains his sunscreen application methods… a third layer just before the start, thanks.
Tiago Machado told me that, although he has good climbing form, he’ll do all he can to help his new Australian team-mate Nathan Haas get to the line first…
Brendan Canty believes he can climb with the best but also says he “may fly under the radar a little” in stage four…
Shayne Bannan talks about the sprint of Caleb Ewan in stage three and also what we can expect from Daryl Impey in stage four.
Damien Howson talks about his average power for an effort up the Norton Summit climb – “an average of 430 watts…”
And Campbell Flakemore reflects on being back at a bike race but without his bike…
Have a listen. I hope you enjoy some of the quotes collected.
