An accident in a race claimed the life of a fine young man. Gino Mäder was 26 years old. The cycling community is in shock as it comes to terms with the grief.

Tributes to Gino Mäder are flooding the feeds of the sporting community. The Swiss rider from the Bahrain Victorious team died after being involved in a crash during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse.

Stage six was neutralised out of respect.

Cycling is a sport that conjures many emotions and words can flow easily when writing about the beauty of this wonderful activity. But there are times when it’s simply too difficult to string a sentence together that summarises the feelings of a community in mourning.

We salute Gino, his many achievements – on and off the bike – and send our love and wishes to his family, friends, team-mates and all who knew him.

Below are some photos by Stefano Sirotti of a cyclist who was an inspiration to many, a young man who is sadly no longer with us.
