Jayco Herald-Sun Tour gallery: Melbourne prologue

It’s not over yet. The ‘Summer of Cycling’ continues in Victoria this week with the staging of the Jayco-Herald Sun Tour(s): one for women and one for men. Here is a gallery of the prologue for the men with photos by Jean-Pierre Ronco.

Annemiek van Vleuten and Ed Clancy were the winners on a short course in the heart of Melbourne. The Dutchwoman is contesting the Women’s Herald Sun Tour, the Brit races in the Jayco-Herald Sun Tour – yep, there’s a women’s and men’s edition in 2018. The former got underway on Tuesday while the latter began with the short TT on Wednesday.

The rainbow jersey was on the podium yesterday: van Vleuten, the reigning world champion in the TT beat the runner-up from the worlds race last year, Katrin Garfoot. (We’ll shortly post the gallery for the women’s race.)

On the opening day of the men’s race, the defending champion Damian Howson finished 21st but only six seconds behind the omnium specialist and (regular) team pursuit gold medallist, Ed Clancy.

Following the short 1.6km TT in Melbourne, the Brit will wear the yellow jersey for the first road stage, the 162km journey from Colac to Warrnambool on Thursday.
