RIDE’s retro bike reviews

RIDE’s retro bike reviews

One popular feature of RIDE Cycling Review over the years is the ‘Retro Review’ series where we looked back at bikes of yesteryear and offered an overview of the products used by certain riders. For a random Friday flashback, we looked into the archives and found this collection of opening spreads…

While the vast majority of the stories were written by one of Australian cycling’s true historians, Warren Meade – a bike collector of repute – the actual concept for the ‘Retro Review’ series can be credited to Yuzuru Sunada.

The Japanese photographer has been a contributor to RIDE Media since 2001. In his catalogue of thousands of photos are a few true gems, including the bikes of Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali, Francesco Moser, Gerrie Knetemann, and a host of other champion riders from over the years.

The inspiration for the Retro Reviews came from Sunada’s images and it came to pass that Meade was the ideal candidate to add an explanation.

Over time many other writers and photographers would contribute to the series and it remains something that many readers remember fondly from our print editions.

In time, we’ll delve into the archives and publish these features online.

Here is a summary of the complete list of Retro Reviews –

Don’t hesitate to write and tell us which feature you’d most like to see online.

The photos are fabulous but the stories are also most informative and a great reminder of how rapidly products have evolved.

To everyone who contributed to this series over the years, thank you for your input.

To anyone who has a bike that they’d like to share with a wider audience, don’t hesitate to write and tell us your story… there is genuine merit to looking back on how things were and getting a dose of cycling history. Often they are sitting out there in the shed collecting dust but, with the help of guys like Warren Meade, it could turn into a feature that enlightens someone about the heritage of cycling.
