UAE Team Emirates will race Colnago bikes with Shimano groupsets and ENVE wheels in 2023. The V4RS is the frame Jay Vine used for his debut with the team.
Before the start of the TDU, RIDE Media got a chance to get some close-up shots of the bike that would go on to win the general classification.
Jay Vine got off to a winning beginning to his time with UAE Team Emirates. He took the lead of GC thanks to an attacking move on the Corkscrew climb of stage three – finishing third behind Pello Bilbao and Simon Yates in Campbelltown, and then defended with style in stages four and five.
Shimano launched the 12-speed Dura-Ace groupset in late 2021 and the big changes included a move to ‘semi-wireless’ Di2 electronic shifting.
Vine raced the TDU with 54/40 chainrings and a 11-30 cassette. (The latest iteration of Shimano’s Dura-Ace groupset – R9200 – also offers gearing combinations of 50/34 or 52/36 up front, and 11-34 at the rear.)
The team’s power meter system has also changed for 2023, with Shimano’s FC-R9200-P matched to head units from Wahoo (with Vine option for the 94g Elemnt Roam) which are fitted to an integrated mount on the carbon-fibre handlebar and stem.
Disc brakes feature on the team’s fleet of bikes, with Shimano rotors fitted to ENVE wheels.
Tyre selection varies considerably from team to team in 2023, and UAE raced with a tubeless set-up at the TDU with Continental GP 5000TT TR (ie. Tubeless Ready).
Vine’s wheels for the race were ENVE SES 4.5, with a 25mm internal width (32mm external) and a rim depth of 56mm at the rear and 50mm up front.
With the early season starting earlier again in 2023, team mechanics began building the fleet late last year with most riders at the Tour Down Under having two road bikes (one for racing, one as a spare). The featured Colnago V4Rs is Vine’s ‘number-one’ bike.
Mechanics tidy up the wiring with a small electrical tie on the rear-facing direct-mount derailleur hanger (below).
Race numbers are attached on a mount fitted to the seatpost (above) and the fastening is managed by the wedge-style system that is prevalent in 2023. The V4Rs frame has a neat rubber cover to hide the bolt.
The saddle of choice for Vine is Prologo’s ‘Scratch M5’ (140mm wide and 250mm long) – with carbon-fibre rails – fitted to the offset Colnago seatpost.
