By winning the World Championships time trial on Sunday in Montreal, Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel has further cemented his place in the history of the discipline.
Remco Evenepoel is the first rider to win the world championships time trial four times in a row, after his titles in Glasgow, Zurich, Kigali and now Montreal on Sunday afternoon. This statistic should be qualified by the fact that the event has only existed since 1994.
The Belgian is the third rider to collect four rainbow jerseys in the discipline, a record, alongside Fabian Cancellara (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) and Tony Martin (2011, 2012, 2013, 2016). Australia’s Michael Rogers won the first TT hattrick, retrospectively awarded the win for 2003 in Hamilton (after David Millar’s doping confession and subsequent disqualification from when the worlds were last held in Canada) then taking gold on the day of the race in Verona, Italy (2004) and Madrid (2005).
Next year’s time trial around Lake Annecy at the world championships in Haute-Savoie should give Evenepoel the chance to become the sole record holder.
With his victory on the banks of the Saint Lawrence in Montreal on Sunday 20 September 2026, Evenepoel extended his unbeaten run in time trials to seven. He has not been beaten in the discipline since the very particular time trial at Peyragudes in last year’s Tour de France (stage 13, won by Tadej Pogacar, with Evenepoel 12th in the uphill challenge a day before he abandoned the TDF). More broadly, the Brabanter has won 13 of his last 14 time trials, starting with his Olympic title in Paris. By comparison, Eddy Merckx managed to triumph in 10 consecutive time trials, spanning the 1972 and 1973 seasons, with notably three wins in the Giro d’Italia and as many in the Tour de France, at a time when there were far more time trials, in particular half-stages.
This world title is Remco Evenepoel’s 27th victory in a time trial, out of 79 career wins to date, meaning that more than 34% of his successes have come in individual efforts against the clock.
